Bolton Castle

Bolton Castle is a fortification with four corner towers connected by walls forming a rectangular structure with an open courtyard in the center. The layout follows a typical medieval military design intended to protect occupants and resist attacks.

Construction began in 1379 when a local nobleman commissioned an architect to build a defensive stronghold in the north of England. The project reflected the period's military needs and the builder's wealth and status.

The castle displays how medieval people lived and worked through exhibits of cooking, weaponry, and furnishings spread across restored rooms. Visitors can imagine nobles and servants moving through these chambers during their daily routines.

Wear sturdy shoes since staircases are steep and some areas have uneven surfaces throughout the building. Plan to spend around two hours to explore the main sections and exhibits thoroughly.

A Scottish queen was held here in 1568 for several months and occupied one of the towers as her residence. This historical captivity brought international attention to the fortress.
