Richard le Scrope initiated the construction of Bolton Castle in 1379, enlisting architect John Lewyn to design this military stronghold during the reign of Richard II.
The castle maintains exhibits demonstrating medieval life, including displays of traditional cooking methods, weaponry, and period furniture in multiple restored chambers.
Visitors can access Bolton Castle from February through October between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM, with guided tours available throughout the main areas.
Mary Queen of Scots spent six months as a prisoner at Bolton Castle in 1568, occupying the southwest tower with her retinue of thirty knights.
