Burrium, Roman fortress in Usk, Wales.
Burrium is a Roman fortress lying beneath modern Usk that was built with earth and timber defenses to protect a large military installation. The excavation sites reveal the remains of barrack buildings, storage facilities, and administrative structures from different periods of occupation.
The Romans established this fortress around 55 AD as a base for the Twentieth Legion during their military campaign against the Silures in Wales. It served an important role in Roman control of the region for roughly a century.
The archaeological remains show how Roman soldiers lived and worked here, with traces of workshops and housing scattered across the site. You can see from the surviving foundations how everyday life operated in this large military base.
The site has several accessible excavation areas with information panels explaining the layout and findings. Wear comfortable shoes since the terrain is uneven and you will need to walk around to explore the various sections.
After the legion withdrew around 66 AD, the site transformed into an iron production center rather than becoming a civilian settlement. This shift shows how the Romans adapted their military installations to meet economic needs.
