University of Southampton, Research university in Southampton, United Kingdom.
The University of Southampton is a research institution in the southern English port city of Southampton with seven locations between Hampshire and Winchester. Twenty academic faculties are distributed across the campus sites with lecture halls, laboratories and residence halls for domestic and international students.
Henry Robertson Hartley founded the institution in 1862 as Hartley Institution to promote science and education in the region. Queen Elizabeth II granted the institution a royal charter in 1952 with full university status and degree-awarding powers.
The library carries Lord Hartley's name and preserves handwritten documents from leading figures in British history. Students use the reading rooms in a modern building overlooking the green outdoor areas of the campus.
International applicants should apply early to secure a guaranteed residence hall place, especially before the autumn term begins. The campus sites are easily reached by bicycle or public transport and offer signposted paths between buildings.
During the First World War the university converted its buildings into a hospital and suspended regular teaching for several years. The rooms served to care for wounded soldiers and were only returned to academic use after the war ended.
