La Sainte Union College of Higher Education, Teacher training college in Southampton, England.
La Sainte Union College of Higher Education was a Catholic teacher training college in Southampton, England, offering degree-level courses in education, humanities, arts, and modern languages. The site consisted of several buildings spread across a campus in the north of the city, near The Avenue.
The college was founded and run by the La Sainte Union des Sacrés Coeurs, a French religious order established in the 19th century with a mission focused on education. It operated in Southampton for several decades before closing in 1997, when the buildings were either converted or sold.
The college was run by a French Catholic religious order, and that origin gave the institution a particular character that set it apart from other teacher training colleges in England. Students there were trained not only in academic subjects but also within a framework shaped by the values of that congregation.
The site is no longer open to the public, as most of the former campus was converted into private housing after the college closed. Two of the original residential buildings are now used by the University of Southampton and can be seen from the street.
Although the college closed in 1997, two of its former dormitory buildings were taken over by the University of Southampton rather than converted to private use like the rest of the site. This means that part of the original campus has stayed connected to student life without interruption.
