Eilean Donan, Medieval castle in Highland, Scotland
The stone fortress stands on a small tidal island at the meeting point of three sea lochs, connected to the mainland by a stone bridge.
Originally built in the 13th century as a Viking defense, the castle was destroyed in 1719 during the Jacobite uprising and remained in ruins for 200 years.
The castle represents the power of Clan Mackenzie and their allies Clan MacRae, who controlled this strategic Highland location for centuries.
The castle opens daily from 10:00 to 18:00 during peak season and includes exhibitions of period furniture, weapons, and Jacobean artifacts in multiple rooms.
The current structure results from a complete reconstruction between 1912 and 1932, incorporating original materials from the medieval ruins.
