Jesus College, College of the University of Oxford, England
Jesus College is a college of the University of Oxford featuring three interconnected courtyards with buildings that display Gothic Revival style, classical elements, and traditional vertical staircases. The spaces spread across multiple floors and connect residential and teaching areas through narrow passages.
Queen Elizabeth I founded the college on June 27, 1571, following a petition by Hugh Price to create an institution for Welsh scholars at Oxford. The chapel was completed in 1621 and redesigned in 1864 by George Edmund Street.
The library from 1679 holds 11,000 antiquarian books and manuscripts, including important texts from medieval Welsh literature and scholarly works. The reading room maintains its historical arrangement and continues to serve research purposes today.
The college sits near the city center and provides student accommodations, lecture rooms, science laboratories, and sports facilities. Visitors should note that access may be restricted during exam periods and within residential areas.
The chapel combines Gothic and classical style elements in an unusual way, visible in the mixed window shapes and altar area design. This blend resulted from 19th-century renovations.
