Huntingdon, Civil parish and market town in Huntingdonshire, England
Huntingdon is a market town and civil parish in Huntingdonshire, England, sitting along the River Great Ouse. Tudor and Georgian buildings line the central streets and market square, where residential homes and small shops now stand.
The settlement began in the early Middle Ages as a riverside trading post and grew into a regional market town over the centuries. Between 1837 and 2007 it served as the administrative seat of a registration district, which was later absorbed into the Cambridgeshire structure.
The town name comes from Old English roots pointing to a settlement once belonging to hunters. Today brick facades and restored shopfronts line the streets, where small businesses and traditional pubs sit side by side.
The town center is easy to walk through, as most routes are flat and short. Streets around the market square offer parking nearby, while the riverside path is used for walks and cycling.
The former registration district included over fifty separate parishes, which together formed the current regional framework. Many of these small communities have retained their own local councils to this day.
