Garrison Library, Public library in Gibraltar
The Garrison Library encompasses 45,000 books within a neoclassical building that includes rare volumes covering local history, culture, and travel records.
Captain John Drinkwater Bethune established the Garrison Library in 1793 on the former site of the Spanish Governors' residence in Gibraltar.
The library maintains an extensive collection of lithographs, art prints, and historical furnishings that reflect Gibraltar's military and social development.
Visitors can access the library Monday through Friday between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM during winter, with modified summer hours from June to August.
The library grounds feature a dragon tree in the front garden dating from the Spanish period when seafarers introduced this plant to Gibraltar.
