BRIT School for Performing Arts and Technology, Performing arts school in Croydon, England
The BRIT School for Performing Arts and Technology is a specialist school for performing arts and technical skills in the London Borough of Croydon. The campus includes several buildings with stages, rehearsal spaces, dance studios, and facilities for film production, sound engineering, and design.
The school opened in 1991 with funding from the British government and support from the music industry. It was the first of its kind in the United Kingdom and has remained tuition-free since then.
The name comes from the British Record Industry Trust, an organization from the music industry that supported the project at its start. Today, young people here learn across different areas – from dance and music production to digital media and stage work.
Performances and showcases take place regularly in the two theatre spaces, which together seat over 600 people. Access is normally limited to students, staff, and invited guests, though public events allow outside visitors to attend when scheduled.
This institution has produced artists such as Adele, Amy Winehouse, Tom Holland, and Jessie J, who later became known worldwide. The training combines stage practice with regular academic qualifications and remains the only tuition-free specialist school of its kind in the country.
