Wellingborough, Administrative borough in Northamptonshire, England.

Wellingborough is a non-metropolitan district in Northamptonshire, east-central England, covering the town of Wellingborough alongside smaller settlements such as Earls Barton, Bozeat, and Wollaston. The River Nene flows through the area, shaping a mostly flat landscape of open fields and river meadows.

Wellingborough grew as a market town during the medieval period, benefiting from its position along trade routes through central England. In 1974, a national government reform turned it into an official district by merging the town with surrounding villages and rural parishes.

The name Wellingborough traces back to an Old English phrase meaning roughly "the fortified place of Waendel's people." Around the town center, buildings from the 1800s still carry traces of the leather trade in their brick facades and former workshop layouts.

Wellingborough town sits on a main rail line between London St Pancras and the north of England, making it straightforward to reach from the capital. Once there, getting around to smaller settlements in the district is easiest by car or local bus.

Wellingborough was home to HM Prison Wellingborough, a jail that operated for over 100 years before closing in 2012. The original building was demolished and a new prison is being built on the same site, making it one of the few places in England where a prison is essentially being rebuilt from scratch.
