Haltwhistle, Market town in Northumberland, United Kingdom
Haltwhistle is a market town in Northumberland positioned midway between Newcastle and Carlisle, featuring several historic stone houses marked with plaques around its market area. The town preserves medieval structures, including Holy Cross Church with its ancient graves from the 13th century.
The town emerged during Roman times and developed later as a settlement with a name derived from Old English words for hill and stream confluence. In the Middle Ages it became an important location with the construction of its church and establishment of noble families in the region.
The Holy Cross Church, constructed in the 13th century, contains medieval graves including the tomb of crusader Thomas de Blenkinsopp.
The town is reachable via the Newcastle-Carlisle railway line or during warmer months through the AD122 bus service. Visitors should note that public transport is limited, especially outside the summer season.
The location sits at Britain's geographical center and near intact stretches of Hadrian's Wall. The area also houses one of the region's few outdoor swimming pools, which is unusual for this northern location.
