Bridgeport

Bridgeport is a coastal city in Fairfield County, Connecticut, positioned where the Pequonnock River meets Long Island Sound. The city sits at sea level and follows the natural shoreline with residential and commercial districts extending inland from the waterfront.

The settlement began in 1639 as Newfield and later took its current name from the first drawbridge built across the Pequonnock River. Incorporation as a city came in 1821 when the community had grown into an industrial center.
