Bridgeport, Port city in Fairfield County, Connecticut, United States.
Bridgeport is a coastal city in Fairfield County, Connecticut, positioned where the Pequonnock River meets Long Island Sound. The city sits at sea level and follows the natural shoreline with residential and commercial districts extending inland from the waterfront.
The settlement began in 1639 as Newfield and later took its current name from the first drawbridge built across the Pequonnock River. Incorporation as a city came in 1821 when the community had grown into an industrial center.
The Barnum Museum displays exhibits connected to P.T. Barnum, whose influence still shapes public parks and facilities around town. Visitors experience a working waterfront culture where industrial heritage blends with everyday urban life.
Visitors reach the city via several major roads and can orient themselves around the harbor and downtown districts. A mobile application connects residents directly to city services for information and assistance.
The city opened the first mutual telephone exchange in North America during 1877, marking a new era in communication. This technical advance happened in a community already known for innovative ideas.
