Pequonnock River Railroad Bridge, Railroad bascule bridge on Pequonnock River, Bridgeport, United States.
The Pequonnock River Railroad Bridge is a bascule bridge with two parallel lift spans crossing the river in Bridgeport. The movable spans allow ships to pass through while trains cross above on separate tracks.
An original bridge was built in 1902 and served rail traffic for many decades. It was completely replaced between 1993 and 1998 with a modern structure while trains continued to cross.
The bridge forms part of the Northeast Corridor, connecting communities along the eastern seaboard through Amtrak and Metro-North passenger services.
Visitors can view the bridge from several vantage points along the river, especially when trains pass or the spans raise for ships. The best views come from public areas near the waterfront where you can see both the rail and river activity.
The bridge was built in three phases to keep both train and ship traffic moving, with the southern span completed first. This approach let engineers replace the structure while maintaining operations in both directions throughout the work.
