Pittsford, Historical town in Monroe County, New York.
Pittsford is a town in Monroe County, New York, located roughly 13 kilometers east of Rochester, and spreads across flat land with neighborhoods and forested areas. The community developed around a major waterway that shaped its layout and structure.
The first settlement was established in 1789 when two brothers purchased extensive land and built initial structures. Growth accelerated after 1825 when a major waterway opened, creating new economic opportunities.
The canal brought traders and settlers who shaped the community's character and left buildings that reflect their era. Walking through town, you encounter structures and streets arranged around these historic trade routes that remain important to local identity.
The center of town concentrates around the canal area, making it easy to reach main spots on foot. For exploring the wider surroundings, a car helps since neighborhoods spread farther out.
Since 1996, a program protects two-thirds of the remaining farms through agreements that prevent development. These areas form green spaces that give breathing room to the built parts and shape the landscape.
