Johnston, Residential town in Providence County, Rhode Island, US
Johnston is a residential town in Providence County, Rhode Island that spreads across several neighborhoods with home areas, commercial zones, and public parks. The terrain sits at roughly 100 feet (30 meters) above sea level.
Founded in 1636 and incorporated in 1759, the town received its name from colonial attorney Augustus Johnston during the early settlement period. This early establishment shaped the region's growth over the following centuries.
The town has a strong Italian-American community visible in local festivals and family-owned businesses that carry on traditional celebrations year-round.
The town is easy to navigate as residential and business areas are clearly separated. Roads are well-marked and parks are accessible at multiple locations throughout the area.
The town is home to Rhode Island's only operational landfill and preserves the historic Clemence-Irons House from 1691. This structure is a remnant from the early colonial era and remains standing today.
