Aurora County is an administrative division in South Dakota that covers rolling terrain and farmland across its landscape. Small lakes and ponds dot the area, creating water features throughout the region.
The county was established in 1879 during the Dakota Territory period and named after the Roman goddess of dawn. Plankinton was chosen as its administrative center from the beginning.
The county maintains three main communities - Plankinton, Stickney, and White Lake - each contributing to the local traditions and social structure.
Interstate 90 and US Route 281 pass through the county, connecting it to neighboring regions. These main highways make it easy to reach larger cities and points of interest beyond the area.
The area is home to two public shooting ranges: Crystal Lake and Hanson Lake. These facilities draw local hunters and sport shooters to the region.
