Russell County

Russell County spans the Cumberland Plateau in southwestern Virginia, characterized by mountains, forests, and river valleys throughout the region. The area sits entirely within the Appalachian mountains and features a network of ridges and hollows.

The county was established in 1786 from Washington County territory and named after Colonel William Russell, a prominent local leader. Its first court session took place at Castle's Woods settlement, marking the beginning of organized administration.
