Oregon, city in Ogle County, Illinois, United States
Oregon is a small city in northern Illinois, US, located in Ogle County along the western bank of the Rock River. Its compact downtown is made up mostly of older brick buildings, with public parks and open green areas running along the riverfront.
Oregon was founded in the early 19th century as a riverside settlement and grew into a regional center for trade and farming tied to the Rock River. By the late 1800s, the area began attracting artists and writers, giving the town a character that went beyond its agricultural roots.
Oregon has a long connection to the visual arts, which still shapes how the town feels today. The sculptor Lorado Taft spent many summers near the city and founded the Eagle's Nest art colony on a bluff above the Rock River, drawing artists from across the country.
Most of the town is easy to walk through, and parking is generally available close to the main spots. To explore the riverfront trails or the surrounding countryside, having a car makes things much easier since some areas sit outside the walkable core.
Just outside town stands Lowden State Park, home to a large concrete statue of a Native American figure designed by Lorado Taft, commonly known as Black Hawk. The statue rises about 48 feet (roughly 15 meters) above the Rock River bluff and can be seen from a good distance.
