Greenfield

Greenfield is a city in Hancock County, Indiana, located in the central part of the county at an elevation of about 269 meters. U.S. Route 40 passes through its center, connecting different areas of the town.

The Indiana Central Railroad completed its first steam railway line at the southern edge of Greenfield in 1853, transforming regional transportation. Later, natural gas discoveries in the late 19th century spurred rapid industrial growth and economic development in the town.

A statue honoring poet James Whitcomb Riley stands at the Hancock County Courthouse, created through donations from schoolchildren across the nation. The monument reflects how the town values its literary connections and maintains a sense of cultural pride in its notable figures.

The Greenfield-Central Community School Corporation manages educational facilities from elementary through high school across the town. Visitors can navigate the area easily since U.S. Route 40 runs conveniently through the center.

Natural gas reserves were discovered beneath the town in the late 19th century, triggering an industrial boom that drove rapid population growth. This energy resource became the catalyst that transformed Greenfield from a rural settlement into a center of gas industry activity.
