Palos Heights, city in Cook County, Illinois, United States
Palos Heights is a small city in Cook County, Illinois, located about 20 miles (32 km) southwest of downtown Chicago. It is made up mostly of residential streets lined with single-family homes and green spaces.
The area was settled in the 19th century by European immigrants who farmed the land for decades before suburban growth began. Palos Heights was officially incorporated as a city in 1959, when families from Chicago started moving outward in search of more space.
The name "Palos" comes from Palos de la Frontera, the Spanish port from which Columbus set sail in 1492, and was chosen by early settlers who admired that history. Today, the name gives the city a small but noticeable connection to exploration that residents sometimes reference with pride.
Palos Heights has a Metra commuter rail station that connects directly to Chicago, making it easy to visit without a car. Once there, the residential streets are easy to walk or bike, and most points of interest are close to each other.
Lake Katherine Nature Center and Botanic Gardens sits within the city and features walking paths around a natural lake with a small waterfall, which is rare to find inside a suburban community. The site also serves as a stopover for migratory birds, which makes it a good spot for birdwatching in spring and fall.
