St. Charles, Historical settlement in St. Charles County, Missouri, United States

St. Charles extends along the Missouri River banks, featuring a central district with Colonial and Victorian architecture and multiple commercial buildings from different periods.

The settlement began in 1765 as Les Petites Côtes, established by French-Canadian fur trader Louis Blanchette, and later became Missouri's first state capital from 1821 to 1826.

The First Missouri State Capitol Building displays period furniture and exhibits, while the Lewis and Clark Boat House contains full-scale replicas of expedition vessels.

Main Street contains 75 restaurants and shops in preserved buildings, with designated parking areas near the riverfront and throughout the commercial district.

The Missouri River bridge carries both railroad tracks and vehicle lanes, connecting St. Charles to St. Louis County through multiple transportation routes.
