W. R. Grace Building, Postmodern skyscraper on 42nd Street, Manhattan, US.
The W. R. Grace Building is a 50-story skyscraper on 42nd Street in Manhattan, clad in white travertine with black-framed windows creating a striking contrast. The curved outline reaches 192 meters high and defines the skyline along Sixth Avenue.
Gordon Bunshaft designed this tower in the early 1970s on the former site of Stern's department store headquarters. The construction replaced an older building and introduced a new architectural direction to the midtown skyline.
The curved north and south facades follow mathematical curves that set this building apart from typical rectangular towers. This distinctive shape makes the structure easy to spot along the avenue and changes how the street feels when you walk past it.
The building is accessible from multiple sides with entrances positioned between Fifth and Sixth Avenues. Inside you will find dining options, shops, and a well-organized elevator system to move between the numerous floors.
The ground floor houses the Michelin-starred Gabriel Kreuther restaurant, known for French cuisine in an elegant setting. Right nearby is a specialty chocolate shop that adds another layer to the dining experience in the lobby.
