Washington

Washington sits along the southern bank of the Missouri River, roughly 50 miles west of St. Louis, and serves as the largest city in Franklin County. The community spreads across the riverfront area and functions as the main administrative hub for the county.

The settlement began under Spanish rule as St. John Meyer's Settlement, with San Juan del Misuri Fort operating from 1796 to 1803. After this early period, the location grew into an important trading center along the waterway.

Missouri Meerschaum Company is the world's only maker of corn cob pipes and has operated along the town's riverfront for generations. This specialized craft has become woven into the local identity and draws pipe enthusiasts from afar.
