Florida State University, Public university in Tallahassee, United States
Florida State University is a public institution in Tallahassee with 17 colleges offering over 300 programs from undergraduate to doctoral levels. The complex covers 485 acres (196 hectares) and includes lecture halls, residence buildings, athletic facilities, and research centers connected by a network of walkways and green spaces.
The institution was founded in 1851 as Florida Institute and went through several name changes before reaching its current status in 1947. It shifted from an all-women college in the years after 1905 back to a coeducational institution after the Second World War.
The campus hosts public events throughout the year, including concerts, theater performances, and art exhibitions organized by students and visiting artists. Visitors can also experience the atmosphere around sporting events, especially on game days when fans fill the streets and green spaces.
Visitors can explore much of the campus freely, with public areas such as libraries and museum spaces open during set hours. Many buildings are accessible via ground-level entrances and ramps, while parking is available throughout the grounds.
Research projects at this institution led to the development of Taxol, a cancer treatment now used worldwide. The university also operates the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, which generates the strongest magnetic field of its kind on the planet.
