Bolingbrook, Village in Chicago metropolitan area, United States
Bolingbrook is a municipality in the Chicago metropolitan area, located approximately 30 miles (48 kilometers) southwest of downtown and covering an area of roughly 25 square miles (65 square kilometers) across Will and DuPage counties in Illinois. The area consists of residential neighborhoods with single-family homes, townhouses, and apartment complexes, interspersed with commercial zones featuring shopping centers and office buildings along major roadways.
The area remained largely agricultural until the mid-1960s, when new housing developments west of the Des Plaines River led to official incorporation in October 1965. The population grew from around 7,000 to 37,000 within a single decade, reflecting the rapid suburbanization of the Chicago region.
The name combines an early settler's family surname with a local waterway, reflecting the area's rural roots. Today, residents use the many parks and recreational spaces spread across the municipality, which provide a quiet contrast to the busy shopping districts.
Travelers reach the area via Interstate 55 and Interstate 355, both highways connecting directly to Chicago and surrounding suburbs. The Pace bus system provides additional links for shorter trips within the region and to neighboring communities.
The municipality organizes regular international exchange programs with sister cities in other countries, offering residents opportunities to experience global perspectives. These connections lead to local events where cultural traditions from different parts of the world are showcased.
