Bethel, Town in Sullivan County, New York, United States
Bethel is a town in Sullivan County, New York, spreading across forested terrain with several lakes, including White Lake and Silver Lake. Lake Superior State Park provides access to additional waters and recreation areas within the rural landscape.
The town formed in 1809 from Lumberland territory, after European settlers built early communities near White Lake beginning in 1795. Its development followed an agricultural pattern until tourism and later events brought wider recognition to the area.
The Bethel Woods Center for the Arts displays exhibits about 1960s music and society, hosting concerts in an amphitheater that seats thousands. This venue stands where the Woodstock Festival once took place, connecting music history with contemporary performances.
White Lake offers year-round fishing and boating opportunities with several launch points and access spots for water sports enthusiasts. The surrounding forests and waters also suit hiking and nature observation during warmer months.
In August 1969, around half a million people gathered on a farm in Bethel for the Woodstock Festival, even though the event was originally planned for the neighboring town. The fields around this farm became one of the most recognized sites in American music history.
