Valparaiso, County seat in Porter County, Indiana, United States
Valparaiso is a county seat in Porter County in northwestern Indiana between Chicago and South Bend. The town center combines residential areas with shops and restaurants in a compact layout with streets shaded by old trees.
The settlement began in 1836 under the name Portersville and received its current name one year later after the Chilean port city. In the late 19th century the town grew with railway connections and the founding of the present university in 1859.
The university within city limits brings together students from across the country and shapes daily routines with libraries and public events. Church buildings from different eras stand in many neighborhoods and reflect the religious diversity of residents.
Three major roads cross through the town and connect it with Chicago to the northwest and other places in the region. A car makes it easier to move between different neighborhoods and the center.
An annual autumn festival celebrates local businessman Orville Redenbacher with parades and public activities centered on his famous product. The event draws visitors from nearby areas and takes place in the downtown streets.
