Sterling Heights, Metropolitan city in Macomb County, Michigan, US
Sterling Heights is a metropolitan city in Macomb County, Michigan, located about 18 miles north of Detroit at an elevation of 187 meters. The Clinton River flows through the northeastern part of the city, which covers an area of roughly 36.72 square miles.
The area changed from Sterling Township to Sterling Heights in 1968, adding Heights to avoid confusion with another municipality named Sterling in Michigan. This renaming marked the transition from a rural township to a growing suburb in the greater Detroit region.
The city is home to a large Eastern European community and an Assyrian population, who together form a neighborhood known regionally as Little Nineveh. Visitors can see this cultural mix in the local shops, restaurants and houses of worship scattered throughout the area.
The city is served by two public school districts, Utica Community Schools and Warren Consolidated Schools, which provide education for students across the area. Visitors can explore the city by car, as most residential and commercial areas are accessible through a well-developed road network.
This is home to one of the largest Assyrian communities outside the Middle East, which gives the place a distinctive cultural character. The city ranks as the fourth most populated in Michigan by resident count, placing it ahead of many better-known locations in the state.
