Clear Lake

Clear Lake is a small town in Cerro Gordo County in northern Iowa that spreads along a natural freshwater lake. Residential streets with single-family homes and tree-lined avenues alternate with commercial blocks and green spaces along the shore.

Settlers founded communities around the lake in the mid-19th century when the water provided transport and trade routes. The railroad arrived late in the century and pushed the town forward as a regional hub for farming and recreation.

The Surf Ballroom stands where Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. Richardson gave their last performance in 1959 before the plane crash. Visitors today see the original dance hall with its historic stage details and memorabilia honoring these musicians.

Several public parks along the lakeshore offer boat ramps and fishing spots that remain open throughout the year. In winter weather, anglers and outdoor enthusiasts check ice thickness before heading out onto the frozen surface.

In winter, locals organize ice fishing contests and snowmobile races on the frozen lake when temperatures create a safe ice layer. The town area also hosts descendants of fish species that settlers introduced in the 19th century to alter the local ecosystem.
