Schaumburg, Commercial village in Cook County, Illinois
Schaumburg is a suburb in Cook County, Illinois, with residential streets, shopping areas and green spaces. Roads and avenues connect different neighborhoods across roughly 80 square kilometers (30 square miles), blending housing with office buildings and retail zones.
German immigrants founded the settlement as a farming community in the mid-1800s and named it after their homeland. In the late 20th century it grew rapidly around new shopping centers and commercial developments that replaced farmland.
The name comes from Schaumburg-Lippe, the homeland region of German settlers who arrived in the mid-1800s. Today the place functions as a commercial and residential hub, where people work, shop and spend time in parks and shopping centers spread throughout the area.
The suburb sits around 45 kilometers (28 miles) northwest of Chicago and is easy to reach by highway or commuter train. Visitors traveling by car will find ample parking near shopping centers and office areas.
The Schaumburg Township District Library runs one of the largest public library collections in Illinois suburbs. More than 70,000 people use its books, digital media and regular educational programs throughout the year.
