Cape Neddick Light, Maritime lighthouse on Nubble Island in York, United States
Cape Neddick Light is a lighthouse on Nubble Island in York, United States. The white cast iron tower stands beside a red Victorian keeper's dwelling with two stories, a fog horn building, and several outbuildings.
The structure was completed in 1879 after Congress approved funding for construction on the island. The lens was replaced in 1928 with a Fresnel lens that remains in operation today.
Locals call the lighthouse Nubble Light, a name that comes from the small rocky island it sits on just offshore. The tower and keeper's house appear on countless postcards and holiday cards sold throughout New England.
The lighthouse can be viewed from Sohier Park on the mainland without needing to take a boat. The park offers parking, public restrooms, and viewing scopes for a closer look at the island.
NASA chose a photograph of this lighthouse in 1977 for the Voyager spacecraft carrying images of Earth into space. The selection was meant to show extraterrestrial life what Earth looks like.
