Clough Creek and Sand Ridge Archeological District, Archaeological district in Anderson Township, US.

Description

Clough Creek and Sand Ridge Archeological District comprises two separate excavation sites in southwestern Ohio along a creek and ridge formation. The sites contain multiple layers of artifacts scattered across approximately 70 acres, with materials found buried up to 5 feet deep in the soil.

History

The sites contain artifacts spanning several prehistoric periods, with strong evidence of Fort Ancient culture including stone tools, pottery, and projectile points. The record shows that later settlements were built directly over earlier occupation layers at the Sand Ridge location.

Culture

Evidence from the sites reveals how seasonal visitors used this area, relying on fishing in nearby waters and collecting resources from the creek and ridge lands.

Practical

These sites remain active research areas where excavation work continues, meaning public access may be limited or scheduled. Contact local authorities or regional museums before planning a visit to confirm current access options and any available guided experiences.

Did you know?

The Sand Ridge site reveals a striking overlap where a Fort Ancient village was built directly atop an earlier Woodland settlement. This layering demonstrates that people returned to this location repeatedly over many centuries.
