Wayne is a township in northern New Jersey within Passaic County, with residential neighborhoods, commercial zones, and educational facilities spread across roughly 25 square miles. The terrain sits at about 174 feet (53 meters) elevation and includes both developed areas and green spaces with parks and recreational zones.
The New Jersey Legislature created this township on April 12, 1847, from portions of Manchester Township and named it after Revolutionary War General Anthony Wayne. George Washington used the Dey Mansion here as his military headquarters during certain phases of his campaign.
William Paterson University brings students from across the region to this township, adding a youthful presence to local cafés and bookshops. Willowbrook Mall draws daily visitors from throughout Passaic County and serves as a weekend social gathering point for many families.
The township offers around 60 recreational facilities, including sports fields, playgrounds, and walking trails spread throughout the area. Several highways connect the location to New York City, and public transit provides additional travel options for visitors without a car.
The Dey Mansion served George Washington as a military command center during parts of the Revolutionary campaign and still stands today as a historic building in the township. Visitors can tour the property and see the rooms where strategic war decisions were made.
