Pompton Lake

Pompton Lake, body of water

Pompton Lake is a man-made reservoir covering about 175 acres, situated between the towns of Pompton Lakes and Wayne in New Jersey. The body of water is fed primarily by the Ramapo River and surrounded by trees and open land where visitors can walk peacefully and observe wildlife.

The lake was created in the early 20th century when a dam was built across the Ramapo River, following the destruction of a wooden predecessor during a 1903 flood. The new dam, completed in 1908, has stored water for surrounding communities and shaped the region's water management ever since.

The lake's name reflects its purpose as a water storage facility for nearby communities. You can see how local residents and visitors use the shoreline for fishing, paddling small boats, and enjoying outdoor family gatherings.

The area is accessible throughout the year and best suited for outdoor activities during warmer months. Parking and walking paths along Lakeside Avenue provide easy access, making the location ideal for strolls and quiet observation.

Near the water sits Sunnybank, the former home of renowned author Albert Payson Terhune, offering a rare glimpse into the area's literary past. This historic estate uniquely connects the region's water history with its cultural heritage.
