The University of Vermont is a public research institution in Burlington with colleges covering medicine, agriculture, engineering and liberal arts. Its campus spreads across hillside grounds overlooking Lake Champlain and the Adirondacks.
The institution began in 1791 as the fifth college of its kind in New England. It merged with Vermont Agricultural College in 1865, gaining federal funding as a land-grant institution.
