New England Conservatory, Music conservatory in Fenway, Boston, United States
The New England Conservatory occupies three buildings with classrooms, practice rooms, performance halls and the Jordan Hall auditorium near Symphony Hall. Students have access to libraries with scores and recordings as well as studios for recording work and composition.
Eben Tourjée founded the institution in 1867 as the oldest independent music school in the United States. Eben Jordan II donated funds to build Jordan Hall, which was completed in 1904.
The hall seats around 1,013 people and students from the school perform regularly in free concerts for the public. Works by Bach, Mozart and contemporary composers sound here during performances by ensembles and students.
The school sits near the Massachusetts Avenue corridor and can be reached on foot from Symphony subway station. Visitors may attend concerts during the academic year when ensembles and soloists perform.
The acoustics in Jordan Hall were created without modern technology and engineers tested the sound during construction with live musicians. Benches with cushions and wood paneling on the walls contribute to the sound quality.
