Canandaigua

Canandaigua is a city located at the northern end of Canandaigua Lake in New York State. It spreads across gently rolling hills with parks, residential neighborhoods, and public facilities shaped by its lakeside setting.

The city was founded in 1788 and developed into a major railroad and steamboat hub during the 19th century. This importance shaped the local economy with brick factories and manufacturing operations.

The name comes from the Haudenosaunee language and means "stone on the water". Visitors can see this heritage reflected in local monuments and park names that honor the original inhabitants.

Kershaw Beach and Canandaigua Lake State Marine Park offer direct water access for swimming, boating, and fishing. These areas are most active during warmer months and should be visited with appropriate preparation.

Susan B. Anthony was tried in the city in 1873 for illegal voting, marking a pivotal moment in the struggle for women's voting rights. This trial made the city a landmark in the fight for equality.
