Old Naval Observatory, Astronomical observatory on Observatory Hill in Washington, D.C., United States.

The Old Naval Observatory features a Greek Revival architectural design with a central domed structure housing astronomical instruments and research facilities.

From 1844 to 1893, this facility served as the first National Observatory of the United States, conducting astronomical measurements and maintaining official time.

The observatory advanced American scientific independence through astronomical research, maritime navigation improvements, and standardized time-keeping for the nation.

Located at 2300 E Street NW, the observatory complex now functions as administrative offices for the Naval Bureau of Medicine and Surgery.

Astronomer Asaph Hall used the observatory's 26-inch refracting telescope, the largest of its time, to discover Mars' moons in 1877.
