Lake James, Mountain reservoir in Western North Carolina, United States.
Lake James is a large mountain reservoir in western North Carolina formed by a series of dams and covering an extensive water surface. The lake features a complex shoreline with numerous coves and inlets surrounded by forested hillsides that slope down to the water's edge.
A power company built three dams between 1916 and 1923 to create this reservoir and control water flow through the mountain valleys. The construction project flooded the lowlands and permanently changed the landscape of the region.
The Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail passes through the Lake James area, marking the path of Revolutionary War soldiers.
Public access points around the lake allow visitors to launch boats and enjoy water activities from several locations. A nearby state park provides additional facilities and makes it easy to explore different parts of the shoreline.
When the lake was formed, an entire farming community called Fonta Flora was submerged beneath the rising water. The abandoned farms and homes now rest on the lake floor, marking what was once a settled valley.
