La Fortaleza, Executive mansion in Old San Juan, United States.
La Fortaleza is the governor's residence in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico, sitting on a cliff above San Juan Bay. Two defensive towers flank the central administrative building, which is surrounded by formal gardens overlooking the water.
The fortress was built in the 16th century as a military defense structure to protect the entrance to San Juan harbor. Its function changed fundamentally from 1846, when it became the official governor's residence and left behind its military role.
Visitors see the official working residence of Puerto Rico's governor, who still lives and conducts government business here today. Parts of the building open during tours and show rooms where political decisions are made.
Tours through the building run Monday to Friday between 8:15 AM and 3:30 PM and require advance registration. Visitors over 21 must bring photo identification for security checks at the entrance.
A historic longcase clock inside still shows the time when Spanish rule ended in Puerto Rico in 1898. The clock has not been wound or reset since and remains as a silent witness to that turning point.
