Fort Christian, Danish military fort in Charlotte Amalie, US Virgin Islands.
Fort Christian contains stone curtain walls and diamond-shaped bastions at its corners, with walls reaching between three and six feet in thickness.
The fort was constructed between 1672 and 1680 under Governor Jørgen Iversen Dyppel's supervision and served as the administrative center for Danish colonial operations.
The St. Thomas Museum inside Fort Christian exhibits numerous artifacts and artworks that document the Danish colonial period in the Virgin Islands.
Visitors can access the fort's rooftop area to observe Charlotte Amalie harbor and examine the Victorian clock tower added in 1874.
The structure represents the oldest standing building in the U.S. Virgin Islands and functioned as a prison from 1874 to 1983.
