Blackbeard's Castle is a stone tower at the summit of Government Hill in Charlotte Amalie on the United States Virgin Islands. From its vantage points, you can survey the entire harbor and coastline that spread below the elevation.
Danish forces built the structure in 1679 as Skytsborg to watch approaching vessels and shield Fort Christian from potential attacks by sea. Over the centuries the facility remained a military post until it later took on the nickname of the feared buccaneer.
The nickname refers to Edward Teach, the notorious pirate who sailed Caribbean waters in the early 18th century. Visitors today associate the site with tales of buccaneers and seafarers, though no historical record confirms Teach ever used this location.
Follow Lille Taarne Gade to reach the summit and access the grounds. Surrounding areas include displays and exhibits on regional maritime activity.
The Three Queens Fountain stands nearby and honors Mary, Agnes, and Mathilda, who led the Fireburn uprising of 1878. Their memorial recalls one of the most significant labor protests in the island's history.
