The name comes from the Abenaki word 'sobagoo', which describes this large body of water that reminded native peoples of a sea. Local families gather along its shores during summer months to swim and fish in waters that have supported communities for generations.
The Portland Water District manages the reservoir, which provides drinking water for one fifth of Maine's population. Visitors will find several public access points along the shores where waterfront recreation is possible.
British military pilots trained over the lake during World War II, with several aircraft crashing into its waters. A Corsair fighter plane collided mid-air in 1944 and still rests on the bottom today.
