Fairmont is a small city on the Monongahela River in north central West Virginia, sitting at roughly 300 meters elevation between Morgantown and Clarksburg. The riverbanks shape the layout of the town, while homes and businesses spread across the gentle hills typical of this region.
The town was originally called Middletown and founded in 1819. It received its current name in 1843.
The pepperoni roll began in the 1920s as quick food for miners who had no time for hot meals during their shifts. Today various local bakeries make these filled dough rolls with their own recipes, so visitors can try different versions of the regional specialty.
Interstate 79 and U.S. Highway 250 connect the town to larger places nearby and make travel easier through north central West Virginia. Visitors can continue in both northern and southern directions from here.
During the Civil War, Confederate troops raided the area and disrupted Union supply routes that ran through this part of West Virginia. These attacks interrupted the flow of provisions along the river and roads for periods of time.
