East River Park

East River Park is a large public space stretching along Manhattan's eastern waterfront with sports fields, playgrounds, and paths for running and cycling. The grounds include different zones designed for recreation and outdoor activities throughout the year.

The park was created in the 1930s when Robert Moses transformed former industrial shipping areas into a public recreation space. This change brought green space and new possibilities for outdoor activity to the Lower East Side.

The amphitheater here honors children who lost parents in the September 11 attacks, serving as a gathering place for the neighborhood. The space reflects how the community has transformed this waterfront into a place of remembrance and connection.

The park is easy to reach by subway and bus services that connect to multiple entrances. Keep in mind that portions are currently under renovation, but main recreational areas remain open for visitors to enjoy.

The Lower East Side Ecology Center employs thousands of volunteers who tend native plant gardens throughout the grounds and maintain the park's natural character. This effort makes it a center for ecological stewardship in the heart of the city.
