Mahomet, village in Illinois, United States
Mahomet is a village in Champaign County, Illinois, situated near the Sangamon River. It features wide streets, friendly homes, and tree-lined roads that create a quiet and welcoming atmosphere.
The village was first settled in 1832 when early residents from Ohio and Virginia were drawn to the area by the Sangamon River and abundant trees for building. The original name Middletown was changed to Mahomet in 1871, possibly inspired by the local post office or community heritage.
Mahomet was originally named Middletown because it sits roughly halfway between two other towns, but the name changed in 1871 to avoid confusion. The current name may come from a local leader or Masonic lodge history and remains part of the village's identity.
The village sits about 10 miles northwest of Champaign at the intersection of Interstate 74 and Illinois Route 47, making it easy to access. It offers ten parks, two forest preserves, and quality schools, plus convenient access to nearby Champaign for shopping and dining.
The village hosts the Mahomet Music Festival on the last weekend of August on Main Street, featuring live music, parades, craft vendors, and carnival rides that draw residents and visitors. Another distinctive event is the Mahomet Soda Fest, where guests can taste more than 100 different soda flavors.
