Canóvanas, Municipality in northeastern Puerto Rico
Canóvanas is a municipality in northeastern Puerto Rico with flat alluvial plains and gentle hills near El Yunque National Forest. The area extends over approximately 6 square kilometers and is connected to neighboring regions by highways PR-3 and PR-66.
The territory was originally the Taíno region of Cayniabón under the cacique Canobaná before Spanish colonizer Miguel Díaz established a ranch there. This early Spanish settlement laid the foundation for later development as a municipality.
The October festival dedicated to Our Lady of Pilar brings residents together for traditional celebrations that shape community life. These yearly gatherings create opportunities for neighbors to share meals, music, and customs that have roots in local heritage.
Highways PR-3 and PR-66 connect the municipality with neighboring areas, and a central transportation hub sits near the main square. Visitors can use local buses to move around the region.
Hipódromo Camarero, Puerto Rico's only horse racing track, operates here and maintains a long tradition of equestrian events. This racing venue draws visitors interested in horse sports and local racing culture.
