Lee Chapel, University Chapel in Lexington, USA
Lee Chapel is a Victorian brick place of worship on the Washington and Lee University campus in Lexington, Virginia. The building displays a tall tower and latticed windows with Romanesque design elements.
The former university president requested construction in 1866 to accommodate more students, and the work was completed two years later. A family crypt was later added beneath the main hall.
The building carries the name of the former university president and continues to hold National Historic Landmark status within the academic institution. Visitors find artworks and memorabilia connected to the family inside, which remain present in daily campus life.
The main hall accommodates up to 600 people and is used for university ceremonies, lectures, and musical performances. Visitors should check opening hours and events in advance, as academic occasions may limit access at times.
Several family members rest in a crypt in the basement, while the horse Traveller is buried just outside the building. Many visitors place small coins on the horse's grave marker as a sign of respect.
