Reverence, Granite sculpture in South Burlington, US.
Reverence is a granite sculpture in South Burlington featuring two black stone tails that rise from the ground. The forms stand approximately 13 feet tall at Technology Park, positioned among contemporary commercial buildings.
The artist Jim Sardonis created this sculpture in 1989, originally placing it in Randolph. After about ten years, it was relocated to its current site in the Technology Park.
The paired black granite forms reference Vermont's deep geological connection to ancient seas. Passersby often pause to consider the contrast between the still sculptures and the living landscape around them.
The sculpture sits within Technology Park and is easily accessible by foot from nearby parking areas. It remains visible and open to view at any time, being an outdoor artwork.
The whale tail forms reference Vermont's buried geological past, when this region lay beneath a prehistoric sea. Marine fossils found in the area show how ancient waters once covered the ground beneath visitors' feet.
