Corolla, Coastal community in Currituck County, North Carolina, United States.
Corolla is a coastal community on the northern Outer Banks of North Carolina in Currituck County. The area includes public beaches, a historic lighthouse with distinctive red brick walls, and various residential areas spread along the waterfront.
The settlement was originally called Jones Hill but became known as Corolla in 1895 when the first post office opened there. The lighthouse was built soon after to guide ships safely along this dangerous stretch of coast.
The Whalehead Club, a mansion built in 1925, shows how wealthy families lived and entertained in the early 1900s through its rooms and collections.
Visitors can access the public beaches at several entry points, with six locations staffed by lifeguards and offering parking. It helps to check tide times and weather conditions before heading to the beach.
A herd of wild Banker horses lives in a sanctuary north of the main residential area and descends from horses that have lived on the island for centuries. These animals are adapted to the harsh coastal environment and visitors sometimes spot them in their natural habitat.
